Atomic Force Microscopy

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a technique helpful for imaging non-conducting surfaces on the atomic scale. Three generations of optical disks — a CD, DVD and Blu-Ray disk — were imaged using AFM and the amount of data which was stored on the disks was then estimated. We determined that the data storage of each disk increased by an order of magnitude for each succeeding generation.
